Preparing for the Voyage of the New Year
In January, many of us make New Year’s resolutions that put pressure on ourselves to do more, be more, look different, or conform to some external idea of what success looks like. Setting intentions and goals is a very worthwhile endeavor. The problem with most New Year’s resolutions, however, is that they aren’t aligned with what we really want, deep inside, and that they expect sudden changes that don’t honor where we are. We set sail for a destination without adequately preparing ourselves. It’s like going on a cruise without considering the weather and activities we want to participate in when we get there.
In reality, January is not the journey.
It’s the provisioning.
It’s the month where:
- You gather your tools
- You orient your compass
- You check your inner weather
- You choose your direction
- You lighten your pack
- You decide what you’re not carrying into the next season
It’s the month of potential, not pressure.
Planting seeds of intention in our daily lives requires mindfulness and clarity, much like tending a garden with care and purpose. By slowing down, we create space to reflect on what truly matters and to nurture those desires with gentle attention. Cultivating this mindful practice transforms our routines into acts of growth and self-discovery.
My Gardening Intentions for 2026
In the coming year, I want to expand my homestead a bit. I want to add another chicken coop and run, and add some hens to my flock (I have too many roosters for the number of hens I currently have). I want to build a large garden with my eldest son to grow foods we can preserve for the winter months. And I want to plant my first fruit guild in the space between the yard and the pasture.
I also want to work on the garden of my heart. I want to weed it well, removing old ways, old patterns, and old childhood rules that no longer fit my plans for the future. I want to tend the embers of creativity and spirit that have been smothered by the busyness of work, family obligations, and life circumstances over the past years. And I want to create a daily rhythm that begins to mirror the energy of the future state I hope to be in when I transition from the world of work to full-time homesteading.
But this month, all I need to do is prepare my tools. In my “outside” garden, I want to discard tools that no longer work the way I’d like them to: dismantle a stack of old pallets, take apart a rabbit hutch that was damaged in a windstorm, pick up old nursery pots, and replace a garden hose that broke at the end of last season. This month will be about making space for the ideas that are coming later – but not yet.
Similarly, I want to make space in the “garden” of my heart for the things that matter most to me by releasing some old worries, outdated ideas, and expectations that weren’t really mine, to begin with. For example, as a Capricorn growing up firmly under Saturn’s thumb, I learned to measure my “worth” by productivity, achievement, and responsibility. These are virtuous, to be sure – but we should not be defined by how many things we have on our to-do list. This is significant work for me. I want to learn to be fully present, in this moment – not worried about a future that no one can see.

One “Next Step”
This week, we will be focusing on identifying the next small step – not the end result – in the journey of our coming year. For example, you know you want to go on a cruise next winter. Rather than creating a detailed itinerary for a trip a year from now, focus on the next small step. Maybe it’s getting your passport updated. Perhaps you need to set up a special bank account to begin saving, little by little, for that special voyage. My garden prep might just start with putting all the nursery pots, sorted by size, in stacks in the shed, or by collecting milk jugs for winter sowing.
Naming That Thing…
I’ve shared some of my intentions for the year: expanding my chicken empire, starting a big “canning and freezing” garden, and planting a fruit guild. What is one big idea that you would like to pursue in 2026? Drop a line in the comments – let’s encourage one another all year!
